Artist's Magazine's Annual Art Competition

Dear Readers of The Artist's Magazine:

After more than twenty years of writing about art and editing art magazines, I know that good art isn't confined to big cities on either coast; in fact, there are great artists, some working in obscurity or near obscurity, all around the world. What's difficult for artists is having their work be seen; that's the reason I can say unequivocally that entering The Artist's Magazine's Annual Art Competition is worth the effort, expense, and time.

Why?
  • You show your work to the editors of the top magazine for working artists.
  • You show your work to our distinguished jurors: Daniel E. Greene (portrait/figure), Sadie Valeri (still life), Stephen Quiller (landscape), Betsy Dillard Stroud (abstract), and John Seerey-Lester (wildlife/animal)
  • If you win a prize, you show your work to our 75,000+ readers, for all winning pictures will be showcased in the December 2015 issue (and finalists' names will be listed, as well.
  • Opportunities open up for you, even if your work doesn't win a top prize. For last year's December cover, we turned to a picture that was a finalist in the Portrait/Figure category: Ardith Starostka's Wallflower, a portrait of her daughter.

Some of the artists we discovered through our annual art competition: Katie O'Hagan, Jeffrey T. Larson, Dean Mitchell, Sally Cooper, Nicholas Raynolds, Candice Bohannon, Julio Reyes, Terry Strickland, Pauline Roche, and many more.

And from those finalists (the images we send to the judges), we select 12 artists whose works and stories will appear online (and be archived online) in Artist of the Month. We also choose 9 finalists' works to be showcased in Competition Spotlight, which appears as the final page in every issue of The Artist's Magazine.

In short, the benefits go on and accrue. Show us your work. Take advantage of the Early-Bird deadline, which is April 1.

Terri Ford Pastel Workshop

Terri Ford travels frequently to paint and teach throughout the US and abroad. Terri received the highest title “Eminent Pastelist” from the International Association of Pastel Societies in June, 2013. She has been working with pastels since 1987, both in her studio and en plein air. Terri has been a frequent award winner at the Carmel Art Festival Plein Air Event. Her works have been published widely in Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, Pratique des Artes and others.

3 DAYS! NOVEMBER 6, 7, 8, 2015.
Studio Workshop
Morro Bay Art Center 835 Main Street, Morro Bay

 DEEPER, DARKER, RICHER!

One of Terri's main objectives in painting is to convey a “fresh and impressionistic” portrayal of her subject's. Her under-paintings are designed to establish strong value patterns and composition. She strives to capture essential lighting conditions and spatial qualities within the painting. Her approach is to begin with a deep, dark, rich underpainting. She then proceeds with the painting using layers of pastel applied with varying pressure to create different conditions and texture. She chooses to paint light using pure pigment, varying temperatures and complimentary color as opposed to “white lights”. During the course of the workshop Terri will discuss the power and variety of underpainting color choices, application of the pastel throughout the painting process, details in the final stages and knowing when to stop. Her intention in painting is to keep it vibrant & fresh, and avoid the pitfalls of overworking.

DAY 1 - Terri will start by demonstrating monochromatic/value underpainting. After this each student will create a monochromatic underpainting. Terri will proceed by demonstrating color layering and taking the painting to the next phase. Students will then proceed with their paintings receiving plenty of individual attention.

DAY 2 - The focus on day 2 will be multi-color underpainting. Terri provides a demonstration and students will follow suit. Terri then proceeds with her approach to further build up the painting...students will continue with their paintings.

DAY 3 - The final demonstrations focus on finishing paintings. They address how to make minor changes/corrections midway through a painting. Terri will discuss and demonstrate what she calls “deconstruction”, which involves making more dramatic changes to a painting. She then emphasizes the final marks/calligraphy that complete the painting. Each demonstration provides techniques that Terri applies to painting both in the studio and plein air painting. Terri provides plenty of individual attention with students as they are painting. Come prepared to learn, work and have fun!
