Artists of the
Autumn Art Studios Tour
Max Redpath-Kennedy
Oil, Acrylic and Pastel
&
John Kennedy
Ceramics

John Kennedy and Max Redpath Kennedy are the artists, along with several drop-in artists, behind the Artists in Cahoots Studios and Gallery. "The art vibe of Auburn along with the beauty of the area, being able to buy a house with a bit of acreage and a creek surrounded with trees and wildlife were the deciding factors in settling here."   However, their careers, Max an educator and program specialist in North Highlands and John an Information Technology Manager based out of San Francisco, kept them commuting long distances and long hours leaving little time to engage in the community art scene much less to get back to their own artistic pursuits. When the youngest child went off to college, John decided it was time to get back to working in clay.

John Kennedy's engagement with ceramics is a series of serendipitous events.  A neighbor built a kick wheel and John was hooked enough to sign up for adult night school pottery classes.  The instructor did a demonstration of Raku and John was fascinated.  Finally, settled in Auburn, John discovered Placer Arts where he further developed his passion for the Raku process of ceramic firings.  This passion set off another string of events:  the pole barn on the Kennedy property was cleared out enough to create a small ceramics studio. However, Raku firings need a work force and space, so more was cleared out of the pole barn and the clay studio grew.  Soon there were regular Raku Parties and all this creativity made Max yearn to take up the art she had left behind-painting.

Max Redpath-Kennedy has had set her sights on being an artist "..well, forever.  My early life revolved around drawing and painting." A Studio Painting major, she had early success with shows of her paintings, etchings and prints, and doing commercial work. However when Max became a mother, and then a single working mother, she had to give up art. Now in Auburn, with retirement approaching and John creating studios, Max decided it was time she had a studio of her own; they needed even more studio space. In her new studio, Max will admit that she is absolutely in love with painting, although drawing comes in as a close second.  Recently studying with Michael Siegel ( a mentee of David Lefell), Max is exploring chiaroscuro painting-the painting of shadow and light- via the techniques of the Abstract Representational School, in her figurative and still life works. "It was a huge awakening to understand, really understand, that all a painter can paint is light. It's the knowledge of paint and how to use paint to express light that is the challenge."  It is a rare day that Max is not in her studio working and a rare Wednesday night that she is not in her Placer Arts Rocklin figure drawing session.  "I never have to wait for inspiration-life inspires me, light inspires me, work inspires me.  I go into my studio and look at my sketches or set up a still life.  Life is always there with light pouring over it; it's up to me to see it and try to capture it with my brush or charcoal.  The possibilities are endless."

Although they both admit to being "materials junkies" John is the more orderly of the two.  He is inspired by the unpredictability of Raku but nonetheless keeps detailed notes of his results to achieve better outcomes.  Recent trips to Ireland and genetic genealogy have brought him closer to his deep roots in Ireland, influencing his designs.  Standing only a few inches from the Neolithic Celtic carvings deep within a tomb at New Grange, walking the ancient sacred grounds of Tara, and sitting inside a stone circle in an Irish meadow, have deepened his understanding of his ancient past, his ancestral Kennedy clan history,  and subsequently given him new direction in his work.

After its long and winding road, the newly renovated "Artists in Cahoots Studios and Gallery" has become a bright, airy, and welcoming space.  John's ceramics studio sits in front of Max's studios, separated by doors with lots of insulation to keep the clay dust away from her acrylics, oils, and pastels.  "Working together in different media, you need to establish some ground rules, like, 'all doors are shut when Raku firings are going on'. " (That rule was made the day that Max had to wash Raku smoke off of her walls and all of her paintings and framed drawings.)  It also helps that John likes to work in the morning and Max prefers afternoons and evenings, it keeps the battle of the radio stations in check. Other than that, both agree that working together is really helpful.  Together they tackle the demands of running what have become second careers in art while sharing the daily business duties of their combined studio enterprise. "We call it work, but it's actually fun; fun that is really interesting, demanding, challenging, introspective, and, even on a bad day, amazingly fulfilling.  It has also been a great way to meet so many wonderful people in the local art community!"

Max and John will have their studios open for a second year during the Autumn Artists' Studios Tour this coming November.  To get a preview of their work, Max is currently in the "Blooming" Show at the General Gomez Arts Gallery, Auburn,  where she won the ribbon for Best of Show , and John is in the "Purposeful Pottery " show as part of America's Clay Fest III at Blue Line Arts, Roseville. For an even bigger preview, Max and John will have their studio open this week-end during the Annual North Auburn Art Studios Tour, May 9th and 10th from 10 AM to 5 PM.  They welcome you to visit them, view their ceramics, paintings, and drawings, and chat while snacking on some of "the best food on the tour!"  They look forward to seeing you!

Looking for Something to do this Summer?

ARTspace for teaching and learning is a program developed for the purpose of bringing Artists and Student Artists together through a teaching and learning environment.

Originally based in the basement of the former Arts Building  which has been reopened as "General Gomez ARTS and Event Center", ARTspace has provided instruction for ongoing classes and workshops since 2011. ARTspace continues to offer programs in the same location  on Wednesdays with afternoon  "drawing and painting" classes for children by Linda Green and early afternoon "Mark Making" class for teens and adults offered by Anita Eisenman.

Since PlacerArts expansion into Rocklin, ARTspace provides classes in Drawing and Painting throughout the week includingSaturday and Sunday. Mara comes to us with 25 years of teaching experience and has inspired students of all ages in the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley. She currently teaches color theory workshops for Gap Corporation in San Francisco. Mara specializes in drawing and painting, with an emphasis on figure drawing and portraiture. She believes "through drawing and painting you expose a truth within yourself that others may have a chance to connect with".

Ongoing Afternoon classes will continue throughout the summer in addition to this great line up of one and two day workshops for children. For a listing of Summer Workshops check out the sidebar of this e-news letter or contact: linda@placerarts.org 530-613-6284 or 916- 672-6950
