"That connection with nature is not only part of my art, it is part of my soul as well."
I was born and raised in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, and came to the United States in 1980. I found an immediate home in the Sierra Nevada foothills. As a child, I was always out hiking, walking, and often just sitting and studying the natural world all around me. That connection with nature is not only part of my art, it is part of my soul as well.

During my twenty year career in the medical field, I explored a wide variety of creative arts including photography, oil painting, acrylic, batik, and clay. By 1990 it was clear that clay would be the medium I most enjoyed, and it became my passion. My works in clay have included many contemporary forms from hand-painted tiles to large sculpted torsos. Presently my art expresses organic shapes finished with silk screen patterns.

Ray Gonzales was my mentor when I first started working in clay. I also studied under Phillippe Faraut and Bennett Bean, both renowned sculptors. I am a life-long student, having studied art and art history at Sierra College and California State University Sacramento. I continue to take annual workshops at the Mendocino Art Center and Sonoma Art Center. Both Henry Moore's abstracted organic forms and Rodin's figure sculptures have been great inspirations for me.

For many years my sculptures have been included in the KVIE Art Auction and exhibited in galleries throughout the foothills and Sacramento. Many of my original works are in private collections. I give a variety of workshops and on-going classes at my Old Library Art Studio in Auburn. I started participating in the Auburn Art Studio Tour in 1996, and have enjoyed being involved in this annual event ever since.

Paula Amerine
Fine Art Painter

People ask me which is my favorite medium and I answer, "The one I am using at the moment I'm painting."
I have studied the lives and work of many historically significant artists, which have led me to experiment with many different art materials.   I enjoy working with various painting mediums including oils, watercolors, oil pastels and colored pencils.  People ask me which is my favorite medium and I answer, "The one I am using at the moment I'm painting."   My career teaching high school art classes promoted my commitment to research, the study of art history, current events and trends that occur during an artist's life time.  Teaching also required that I continuously honed my painting and drawing skills.

Color and design are important elements in my paintings.  I begin a painting by considering the influence of a subject but as the process continues I find the layering of pigments by using multiple glazes leads to the subject matter becoming a secondary concern.   Applying one color of glazing transparencies after another allows me capture volume through the additional use of reflected light and cast shadows.  Fabric design patterns and color theory aid me in creating interesting compositions.

I personally like visual beauty in my artwork.  Painting is the one activity that allows me to bring creative splendor into my world.  I surround myself with the powerful influence of nature's perfection, fresh flowers, abundant fresh fruit and vegetables living in Placer County.  The Art Real Food Cookbook illustrations began with researching the fruit and vegetables grown locally coordinated with the recipes from Joanne Neft, the author and Laura Kenny, the chef, I photographed the subjects in the field with the support of our local farmers.

Currently I am working taking a mixed media approach to painting on top of a canvas stretched grey scale photograph.  The photograph large is large format created with layers of manipulated photographs.  I am seeking to communicate a bit of whimsy in our lives and continue to promote my appreciation of the local availability of agriculture in Placer County.
