Beginning Soft Pastel Workshop

O Street Gallery artist, Kathleen Lawrence-Davis, exhibits her pastels nationally in juried exhibitions across the country. Most recently, her pastel “Cool, Cool Water earned a third place award in the California Art Club member juried exhibition held at Pence Gallery, Davis CA, selected to participate in Markleeville Plein Air, the Artist Member exhibition of Tucson Plein Air Painters, and invited artist exhibition at Pence Gallery, Davis CA in November. Her pastels are in many private collections, to include California Rangeland Trust, American Land Conservancy, Santa Margarita Foundation and Hearst Ranch.

She will share knowledge gained from years of painting, exhibiting and private study with nationally renowned instructors Albert Handel, Bill Hosner, Daniel W. Pinkham and T. Allen Lawson.

Join us for some exciting and time saving information on materials and equipment to help you avoid the frustrating and expensive mistakes on how to get started - or just improve on your current pastel work and equipment!

10 AM - Introduction to set ups (studio and plein air), materials comparison and paper sample giveaways

11 AM- Demonstration and discussion on the approach to landscape painting in pastel.

Lunch at 12:15 to 1:15 (you’re welcome to stay)

1:15 to 4:00 Work on your own painting using photo reference provided by Kathleen, and your own materials and easels. If you do not have your own pastels yet you may work in charcoal and learn to make the basic choices in composition and value to help you get started !

You will receive a materials list when you have signed up. You must have your own easel.

The second class will elaborate on landscape composition and provide some advanced techniques of under painting with turp. or watercolor, layering and mixed media that will enhance your options in working in soft pastel.

10:00 AM: More materials comparisons relative to this class and tips on FRAMING !

11:00 AM Demonstration with under painting techniques

12:00 Set up your materials for afternoon

12:15 – 1:15PM Lunch (you are welcome to stay)

1:15 PM Paint from images provided by Kathleen utilizing under painting and layering techniques. Learn to simplify shapes and focus on value and color choices.

4:00 cleanup J

Materials – Full list provided with signup. Sanded paper preferred as support. If you do not have any, a 9 x 12 sheet will be for sale for $2.00. You do not HAVE to do under painting to paint at this class and just work on other techniques and composition focus.

NOTE: you do not have to have a huge number of pastels for these classes. This is more about getting started. Recommended brands are Rembrandt, Sennelier, even Nupastels which are considered hard pastels. A small beginners set is fine. Since it is landscape some greens and blues are recommended in your mix

This is a casual, get acquainted with the pastel medium opportunity, so bring what you can and get some help with the next steps!
