This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, informative, yet focused working environment for all skill levels. The core of the lesson will be based on drawing, values, edges, composition and creating life-like skin tone color. Students will focus on the fundamentals of drawing the human head while developing new skills in soft pastel. The workshop will feature a live model, and Cuong will demonstrate his own techniques to draw from life. Students will learn to use an approach that helps them see the big shapes first, and then go into details towards the end of the session. This is a great opportunity for you to discover your own passion for drawing, or just take your existing skills to the next level. It will save us lots of time! Instructor:  Trained to be a traditional portraitist at the age of 10 in his native Vietnam, Cuong has always had a passion for drawing human faces. His paintings depend on the dramatic portrayal of light, shadow and environment to create their mood and sense of realism. He believes that a successful painting requires that he establish an emotional connection with his subject, so that the viewer in turn connects at an emotional level with his work. Cuong has been invited to teach in and outside the country, such as Mexico, China, Costa Rica. Cuong has won many awards for his paintings, including Prix de Pastel at the IAPS's 2011 Master Circle Exhibition, Grand Prize Award 2010 Pastel Journal Magazine. Cuong earned his PSA's Master Pastelist, Master Circle status of IAPS, and Distinguished Pastelist of PSWC UArt 2601 J Street, Sacramento 916-443-5721

Hello, my artist friend.

We're having another great workshop in Morro Bay.  If you are interested in figure drawing, this one promises to be one of the best!  Margaret Dyer from Atlanta, Georgia is coming for a 3-day workshop on February 12-14, 2016.  It's right around the corner, and a great way to warm the winter doldrums. 

This workshop is called The Figure in Pastel.

We'll be having live models.  The first part of the workshop will focus on nudes because it is easier than painting fabrics.  Margaret will demo on Day One in the morning, and then we paint, paint, paint.  You can use your own photos or paint from the models.  This workshop is one of our smallest because of the need for a model platform.  Therefore, it is limited to 10 participants.

Mae Christensen

Sherrie Toti Johnson asked me to share the following information with you about memorials for Mae Christensen who passed away on December 15:

There will be two events, both on Friday, January 15.

1)  The internment of George and Mae Christensen (with full military honors for George) on Friday, January 15, at 2pm (please be there by 1:50 as the ceremony will begin promptly at 2pm), at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620 (phone 606 693-2460).  The gate attendant will tell you which lane to go in to meet at either committal shelter 1 or 2.  The ceremony will last 30 minutes.  All are welcome, no limit, and no reservations.  Just please be there by 1:50pm.  At 4pmyou can go back to the cemetery and visit the graveside, if you desire.

2)  Memorial service/reception for Mae Christensen, Friday, January 15 at 6pm at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Recreation Hall.  The church is located at 320 Montrose Drive, Folsom, CA.  Please RSVP as soon as possible to Debi Christensen Thomas atkayakndeb@gmail.com or (530) 220-3765 (text or call and please leave a message if it goes to voice-mail.) 

A light buffet dinner and non-alcohol beverages will be served.  Everyone is welcome, RSVP is to ensure enough food and beverages are available.  If you didn't RSVP by Friday, come anyway.

There is no service, just remembering and celebrating her life.  There will be an extensive slide show and time for anyone to stand up and say something special about her life.

Please come to one of both events.  Mae was a wonderful soul and will be missed.  All her children and most of her grandchildren and great grandchildren will be there.  We hope we see you all there.

Hello Artists and Happy New Year!

I hope that you're doing well and ready to do lots of painting this year!

I'm so excited about the possibilities for the new year and have some fun plans for Chroma Art Studio! 

I've decided to reformat my classes this year to make more time for my travel and gallery show schedule. I think this will benefit us all, as most sessions will be longer than 4 weeks to give plenty of time to finish and work on personal projects. I'm hoping to encourage more individual works this year, and will have class projects as well. I'm also adding Open Studio Days, Art Parties, more shows and lots of new workshops!

Each session will now have at least one Open Studio Day! 

Free to those currently in session, or $15 not in session.

Open Studio Day won't have any instruction, just a fun day to get together and paint at Chroma! Bring your class projects or anything else you'd like to work on, spend the whole day or drop in for a couple of hours any time during Open Studio.

Due to the added expense of keeping the studio space, there will be a slight class price increase this year, I hope you understand.
